Before you start detailing, whether its professional or on you own vehicle, we recommend purchasing the following items as a bare minimum.

  • Pressure washer
  • Wash bucket with wash guard
  • Car shampoo
  • Wash mitt
  • Drying cloth
  • Vacuum cleaner

The pressure washer is arguably the most Important tool when getting started with auto detailing. Although it is not impossible to clean your vehicle without one, the finished results will be massively improved (compared to cleaning without a pressure washer).

When washing your vehicle without a pressure washer the chance of stubborn dirt and debris being left on your vehicle increases. which unfortunately increases any chances of scratching your pride and joy when it comes to your contact clean.

TOP TIP- TO REDUCE THE CHANCES OF SCRATCHES, ALWAYS START OFF THE CLEAN BY PRESSURE WASHING YOUR ENTIRE VEHICLE TO REMOVE ANY LOOSE DEBRIS THAT MAY OTHERWISE SCRATCH THE PAINT WORK.

When picking your ideal pressure washer here are a few things to consider

  1. Price
  2. Pressure
  3. Flow rate
  4. Hose length

We have put a TOP 5 list together for the best electric pressure washers on the market. Price, pressure, flow rate and hose length has all been taken in to account when creating this list.

When it comes to detailing your vehicle, two or more buckets is essential. One containing  the clean water and shampoo and the other to rinse your wash mitt. Practicing this method will reduce the amount of grime and debris being reapplied to the vehicle. The next safety precaution you need to take would be to have a grit guard.

What is a grit guard?

A grit guard is a plastic or metal grill designed to sit just above the bottom of the bucket. Once you have fitted the grit guard to your bucket, the majority of the dirt will sit below your guard instead of being reapplied to your wash mitt.

How to use a grit guard.

  • Insert the grit guard to the bottom of your two buckets.
  • Fill one bucket up with water and your chosen shampoo, fill the next bucket up with water.
  • Jet wash the car before touching it to eliminate the larger chunks of dirt.
  • Apply the soapy mixture to your wash mitt from the first bucket
  • Rinse off the wash mitt in the water only bucket

PRO TIP

AGITATING THE WASH MITT AGAINST THE GRIT GUARD WILL INCREASE THE AMOUNT OF DIRT REMOVED

We recommend MEGUIAR’S BUCKET + GRIT GUARD

In order to get the best results from detailing your vehicle, a good car shampoo is a must! It is the foundation for that ‘brand new, shiny look’ that you desire.

Wash mitts are the next step to maximising the results of your vehicle cleaning while avoiding scuffs and scratches at the same time.

You may be used to using an old sponge when it comes to cleaning your pride and joy but trust us when we say this, sponges are magnets for scratches. By using a wash mitt you are increasing the surface area in contact with the vehicle. When increasing the surface area you give the dirt and debris a lower chance of touching the surface and a higher chance of getting lost within the mitt.

With the mitt fitting straight on your hand you will minimise any chance of dropping the wash mitt and collecting a bunch of dreaded dirt!

Drying your car once you’re done cleaning is a must. If you were to skip this step minerals from the water will dry on your car leaving water spots and ruin all of your hard work.

There are many methods when it comes to drying a car but we, without doubt recommend that you use a soft, plush microfibre drying cloth.

The old fashioned chamois was the detailers choice for many years, but due to the lack of surface area this can lead to scratches in the paint work.
